Katie Vossler is a native East Texan! She grew up just outside of Tyler, where she graduated from Troup High School. Katie's family still lives here and that's why she has returned.
After high school, Katie stayed in this area and attended Tyler Junior College. She earned an associate degree in physics from TJC and then transferred to the University of Oklahoma in Norman, where she graduated with her bachelor's degree in meteorology.
While in college, Katie's favorite hobby was chasing tornadoes. She has followed storms all over Western and Central Oklahoma and even into the Texas Panhandle. Katie also completed an internship at KWTV in Oklahoma City with weather legend, Gary England. She says it was the most rewarding experience and she learned so much from Gary and the other meteorologists on staff.
After college, Katie's first job brought her right back to East Texas. She started her broadcast career at KTRE in Lufkin, as the weekend meteorologist. After two years in Deep East Texas, Katie returned to Oklahoma where she took a job at KOTV in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and that is where she stayed for over five years.
While in Tulsa, Katie was the station's primary storm chaser and she has reported in all kinds of weather from tornadoes to snow storms. Katie also chased storms from the station's helicopter, where she spotted a tornado near Ponca City, in Northern Oklahoma, and did live reports for KOTV's sister station in Oklahoma City.
While in Oklahoma, Katie earned her certification from the American Meteorology Society to become a Certified Broadcast Meteorologist. She is one of only a few women with the CBM and was the first person in Oklahoma to receive the honor. Katie also won an Emmy for her work broadcasting during the ice storm of December 2007, when areas of Oklahoma received up to 3" of ice and half the state was without power for weeks, including her own apartment!
Katie says she gained so much experience during her years in Oklahoma, but after five years, she says she was home sick, which is what brought her back to Tyler. Now, she gets to spend her free time with her family and catch up with old friends.
Katie was voted as one of the Most Loved Television Personalities by "Locals Love Us" and as "Best Weather Forecast" by the readers of BSCENE Magazine.
